The Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) is a mandatory accreditation required by all staff who serve or sell alcohol in Australia. The RSA Online Course is an approved course that provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to serve alcohol responsibly.
The course is divided into four modules:
1. Module 1: Introduction to the RSA:
In this section, you will learn about what is meant by ‘responsible service of alcohol’, how it affects your business, and why it’s important for everyone working in licensed premises to receive white card training in this area. You will also be introduced to some key terms used throughout the course – including ‘consumption levels’ and ‘drinking limits’ – so that you can understand them when they are mentioned later on.
2. Module 2: The Importance of Responsible Service of Alcohol:
This module covers some of the key responsibilities associated with serving alcohol responsibly including understanding your role as a licensee, knowing about the laws regarding responsible service of liquor, knowing what you can do if something goes wrong and identifying when intervention is required from police or ambulance services.
3. Module 3: The Legal Requirements of the RSA:
In this section, you will learn about liquor licensing laws and regulations, as well as the responsibilities of licensees and key terms such as ‘responsible service’, ‘host responsibility’ and ‘server’. This section also covers laws regarding advertising and promotions for alcohol, including responsible drinking messages. You will learn about current legislation relating to the sale, supply, promotion and consumption of alcohol in Australia.
4. Module 4: Practical Strategies for the RSA:
This section focuses on practical strategies for server training, including how to deal with difficult situations involving customers’ behaviour, intoxication or over-consumption of alcohol. It also includes tips on how to communicate with customers regarding their preferences when ordering drinks, including how much/little they would like to drink at one time (e.g., a glass of wine vs a bottle).
Who is required to hold an RSA?
- Anyone who serves or sells alcohol must hold an RSA certificate. This includes:
- Bar staff and waiters/waitresses
- Bartenders (or barperson)
- Caterers and hospitality staff
- Hotel or club managers and supervisors
The Bottom Line:
With the increasing number of venues, pubs and restaurants that are opening up in Australia, it is important to be aware of the laws surrounding alcohol consumption. Upon completion of the RSA Online Course, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion that is valid for three years.
